The European Union updates the list of additives for plastic contact materials for food
the European Commission recently released an updated version of the provisional list of additives for the impact resistance test of plastic contact materials and articles for food drop hammer impact testing machine for thermoplastic pipes, pipe fittings and hard plastic plates (see:/food/chemicalsafety/foodcontact/docs/080410_regulatory_list_7_f). The provisional list of additives used in food plastic contact materials and articles includes the additives involved in the valid application on December 31st, 2006. These additives have not been authorized by the European community
since January 1st, 2010, directive 2002/72/ec stipulates that the list of additives used for food and plastics in contact with materials and articles prone to clogging oilways will clearly exclude all other additives not listed in the list. The substances on the provisional list can be used after January 1st, 2010 according to national legislation, until the provisional list makes other decisions to expand or reduce
the list includes acidic substances, Oils (C8-C22), straight chain, monohydroxy, primary saturated aliphatic alcohols (c3-c22), (butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate) copolymers, silver containing glass (silver magnesium aluminum sodium phosphate silicate borate) with silver content less than 0.5%. The directive gives instructions for the transition period: the production, manufacture and market launch of plastic materials and articles containing 2,4,4 - trichloro-2 dihydroxydiphenyl ether before November 1, 2010 can continue until November 1, 2011 in accordance with national legislation
the substances on the list do not have to be evaluated by EFSA, and 18 new materials are estimated.
